Depending on a school's aims program length may vary.
Short Programs – Select one learning module
1 or 2 days
“Equity and Diversity”: Introducing students to the multicultural diversity and raising the issue of socioeconomic differences between different groups in the city.
Special focus programs such as Leadership days or Workplace skills can be tackled in a one day program
Longer Programs – Select several learning modules
1 week:
A week allows an introduction to the major institutions of the City (for example ‘Law and Order' and ‘Spiritual Melbourne ) with room to tackle a significant rich task. Students are best to stick to 1 or 2 major modules.
2 weeks:
Two weeks allows two modules to be focussed on in detail with room to tackle a significant rich task in greater depth than in one week. There is potential to look at a greater number of themes/modules and in greater detail than in a one week program. Students also have more time to reflect on what they have seen and learnt in the city.
Extended Programs – time to go further in all areas
3 or 4 Weeks
Three or four weeks allows students to develop a deeper appreciation of the city's institutions and the people who live and/or work in the city. In a longer program a greater understanding of the relationships between different institutions and their role in creating a fairer and more equitable society can be developed. Again time for reflection becomes valuable in the learning process.
The other major advantage for a longer program is the potential for student groups to tackle more significant rich tasks often of their own devising.
