City Cite - City immersion experience for secondary students

FAQs

Questions and Answers

Hi there! Have some questions about City Cite? You'll find the answers to common questions below.

  • How long is a program?

This really depends on what you want to achieve from the experience. Currently programs vary from three days to three weeks.

  • Who runs the program?

City Cite will develop and implement the program in consultation with the school.

City Cite staff and school staff team-teach within the City Cite classroom. This enables our knowledge of the city and our partner schools and your knowledge of your students to achieve the best learning outcomes for students.

  • How much does it cost?

The cost of City Cite's programs vary because they are bespoke. Pricing depends on a number of factors – length of program, class size and the nature of the program. Fees consist of a "Basic Fee" for the venue and staffing and "Program Fee" costs for visits, entrance fees and guest speakers. Detailed information regarding an overall cost can be given when a broad outline of the program and length is specified.

  • Do you provide overnight accommodation?

No we don't, but we can assist in finding accommodation at one of the nearby Student Schools' Hostels. Often country schools and their students are able to arrange billets with relations or friends of the family.

  • What safety procedures do you have in place?

During the day very few problems arise in the city for groups of students. We encourage schools to include a talk from Metro Trains cfficers and/or Victoria Police in their program that help to address student concerns, ensure students are aware of their responsibilities, and also outline strategies for staying safe in the city. Additionally, we have an evacuation policy for the building and also the area. Students and visiting staff are briefed on this at the start of each program.

  • Who is responsible for discipline?

Both City Cite staff and visiting school staff share responsibility for discipline. We set guidelines for appropriate behaviour in the city, at City Cite, and when visiting partners.  We encourage schools to ensure classroom teachers rather than replacement teachers attend City Cite where possible, as your knowledge of students' needs ensures you are  best placed to be actively involved in supporting students to be their best.

  • How many students can attend at one time?

We have space for an absolute maximum of 120 students, although four classes of 27 is preferred.

  • How do students get to City Cite?

Most students use public transport. Schools often encourage students to travel with some friends where possible. The journey is usually a major part of the experience.

  • Where do people eat?

There is a well-equipped staff kitchen that allows for catering for parent evenings and professional development functions.

We find most students want to buy their lunch on most days and in this case, students are asked to eat where they buy. Students can bring their own food but are encouraged to go outside at lunchtime, which also provides a good opportunity for students to explore the city.
